The new smoking ban in Thailand bars and eateries is in effect and from what I've observed the law will be treated like every other law in Thailand. What I mean is, some organizations have already put up smoking areas, others say you have to smoke outside the restaurant or bar, and others are ignoring regulations altogether.

The reason for ignoring the ban could possibly be that it'll not really be forced for a couple of weeks. In the place of stiff fines being given, there will be warnings and education before end of May, 2008.

But, then, the charges is going to be large. If forced, smokers could be fined 2000 Baht (roughly $62 US dollars) and venue owners will soon be fined as much as 20,000 Baht (over $600 US dollars).

This will force the restaurant owners and bar to apply what the law states on the property. If the bar only penalized smokers, it would be completely ignored by the establishment owners.

That is nothing really new. Smoking have been banned by thailand in hospitals, government buildings, and train stations for some years now. That is just an of an already existing law.

We've the same law in Hawaii. It's a bit more rigid because we can't smoke within 50 feet of the home of the place. Regulations also provides fines for smokers and bar and restaurant owners.

As I was a bit peeved originally at regulations, a, but as time moved by, it's really no big deal. It is number big deal easily need to move outside to smoke.

I am go out almost daily and presently visiting Khon Kaen, Thailand. I havent gone to any bars but I have visited quite a few restaurants. One of my favorites, La Mai, has setup a smoking area near the toilets. Look restaurant helped me to smoke at the dining table. And, Bu-Sa-Ba restaurant includes a small, covered smoking area in the back of the restaurant.

So, between now and May 31, ask your waiter or waitress if it's okay to smoke. Please utilize it, when they have a smoking area create. In the event that you have to go outside to smoke, like at Kit'z Caf, then just sit at the dining table and have your smoke.

I am uncertain how a main tourist areas, Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket, are likely to respond or what the affect tourism will undoubtedly be. I'd guess that starting on June 1, 2008, you will see an attack to show people that the government is serious about the ban.

Therefore, if you're likely to look at the Land of Smiles, and you smoke cigarettes, make sure if it's OK to smoke before you light to ask. Otherwise, you could have to cover dearly. return to site
