Unprecedented economic progress in Western Australia means that as much as 17,800 extra skilled workers is likely to be desperately needed every year for the next a decade, in accordance with a study released currently by education and training minister Mark McGowan. A few of these skilled workers must result from Australia immigration.

The Beyond the Resources Boom research was commissioned by their State Training Board (STB), and examines Western Australia's economic development and the difficulties faced by the state's workforce.

Skill shortages are set to stay a feature of the labour market, the report concludes, because of the power of the aging workforce and the economy. STB chairman Keith Spence said the need could be achieved through the growth of local training initiatives, qualified immigration from international and interstate, and a mixture of general citizenry growth.

One of the top performing jobs, in terms of expected annual average employment growth between 2006 and 2016, are intermediate mining and construction workers, plumbers, architectural construction tradespersons, and mining, construction and related labourers. Demand for careers in the mining and construction industries is extremely large and a downturn is considered impossible.

Many of these professions are on the Australia Skilled Occupation List and the Australia MODL (Migration Occupations sought After List), which allows people applying for Australian immigration to extra points.

Financial forecasts modelled by the record show there is unlikely to be a boom-bust situation in the small to medium term. This reflects the resource-driven building boom, that is underpinned by strong growth sought after from China and report commodity prices, particularly for the state's major ship, iron ore.

Competent occupations currently make-up almost 60 per cent of the workforce and the report estimates that total demand for greater skills in Western Australia will probably remain constant as a percentage of the economy. Other skilled vocations popular include executives, managers, professionals, associate professionals, tradespersons and associated clerical, income, transportation and production workers. court reporter australia info
