‘It’s time to close’ is the toughest decision - The Globe

</aside>

“The store was something I wanted so badly and for such a long time, michael kors bags,” says Ms. Maduri, 29, who has degrees in culinary studies and sports management. “I was emotionally attached to it. Even today, I still miss my store.”

Gaucho shut its doors in April, 2011, due to poor sales. The decision to close a business is never an easy one. Aside from financial reality, there can be issues related to pride and letting down key stakeholders. And there is no one-size-fits-all approach to making the decision, nor in the process of closing it down.

For Ms. Maduri, the clientele needed to make Gaucho a financial success simply did not materialize. Despite doing her due diligence on the location, the store’s presence on a street best known for its bars and restaurants seemed to lack the gourmands Ms. Maduri desperately needed.

In January, 2011, Ms. Maduri, who co-owned the incorporated business with her mother and brother, made the difficult decision. “I confess, I would have kept going,” she says. “But it was my brother, michael kors outlet, who is more cut-throat, who finally said ‘we have to stop.’ Looking at the numbers, he knew we needed to close the doors.”

David Wood, a lecturer at the University of Western Ontario’s Richard Ivey School of Business, recognizes that closing a business is an emotional process but he encourages owners to remove that element from the decision, as Ms. Maduri’s brother did.

“Engage an adviser to walk you through the process, michael kors handbags,” Mr. Wood says. “What most people underestimate is the amount of time it takes to close a business. If you are planning to sell or wind up your business, it could take at least two years.”

During that time, owners will not only be looking for a buyer, they should ensure that suppliers, customers and other stakeholders are aware of the coming changes, they should invest time in valuing assets, and they should keep existing commitments and obligations. They also need to consider any residual value the company might have, such as customer lists.

For those looking to sell instead of close, the two competing priorities are likely to be maximizing value and ensuring continuation, Mr. Wood says. He suggests owners should not overlook the current management team or other family members as possible buyers.

“This option will probably satisfy the need for continuation of the business,” Mr. Wood explains. “It could be a longer process, as these individuals may not have the capital immediately available, coach factory online, so an earn-out structure may be needed. But it could be an easier sales process, as an accountant or lawyer could structure the deal.”

Mr. Wood took a different approach with his own family business. He is the former president of W.C. Wood Co.,cheap lebron shoes, once one of the largest manufacturers of freezers in North America. The company was sold to a private equity firm and later to appliance-giant Whirlpool.

If the business doesn’t have any value, it comes down to closing.

“It’s really important that you keep your eye on the ball and get out before you are personally liable,” warns Bruce Darlington, chanel sunglasses, partner at Davis LLP, who is based in the Toronto bankruptcy, michael kors outlet, insolvency and restructuring group.

For businesses that are set up as a sole proprietorship, the owner will be personally liable for all outstanding debts. For businesses set up as a corporation, the owners will be personally liable for government debts, lebron 10, such as outstanding retail sales tax and payroll taxes, and any other obligations for which they issued a personal guarantee. The key to not being personally liable is simple ensure the assets of the business are larger than the liabilities.

If business owners think they can just walk away and leave,Ivor Tossell - The Globe and Mail, christian louboutin outlet, Mr. Darlington points out that creditors, landlords,Grapes of Wrath reunite with the High Road - The Globe and M, collection agencies and anyone else who’s owed money won’t likely allow for an easy escape. Provided that a business owner’s debts are paid off and other obligations are fulfilled, her or she could simply walk away.

If there are debts a business owner cannot pay, the better route is to file for either personal or corporate bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. Mr. Darlington estimates a retainer for a trustee-in-bankruptcy could range from $15,000 to $50,000. From there, the trustee notifies the creditors and arranges for a creditors’ meeting to discuss the current state of affairs and the strategy moving forward.

Business owners can also issue a proposal under the act that would require creditors to decide what percentage of debts owing they would be willing to accept as payment. Under this option, the business owner could choose to continue running the business, or close the business down with the debt obligations settled.

“The best thing a business owner can do is seek professional advice,” says Benny Mendlowitz,Facebook Home more sizzle than steak - The Globe and Mail, founder of Toronto-based Mendlowitz and Associates, a chartered accountant and trustee in bankruptcy. “If the money isn’t there to meet your business obligations, you want to ensure you get on the right track and things don’t get out of control.”

If a business owner has debt obligations with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), for example, the CRA can directly contact clients for payment options. The clients are no longer obligated to pay the business, but instead, they pay the government on behalf of the business.

“You should be sitting down to organize your business and plan your finances before the wolves are at the door,” Mr. Mendlowitz says. “Don’t wait for the economy to take a downturn or for your credit rating to fall. You want to know how you can stop the bleeding, whether there’s something that can be salvaged, and how you can stop losing the money you have before it happens.”

In Ms. Maduri’s case, she did lose money and tried to recoup her losses when she shut Gaucho’s doors. In the four months it took to close, she listed Gaucho’s assets online and quickly found a buyer who was opening a similar business in Picton, Ont. She was able to sell some of the remaining assets to a liquidator and inventory was sold at a low price to ensure there would be minimal waste. Ms. Maduri gave her three employees working notice and negotiated with suppliers to reduce the amount Gaucho owed under existing contracts.

While Ms. Maduri lost money, she didn’t lose the kitchen sink and she didn’t lose faith in her entrepreneurial abilities. In May 2012, she opened a new business with two partners at the same location as Gaucho and actually made use of the kitchen sink. The new venture is a better fit with the established businesses in the neighbourhood.

She has opened a Wild Wing franchise. “Besides the standard fare Wild Wing offers, we also have a Gaucho menu, offering the fare Gaucho was known for, such as empanadas, chorizos and the classic Gaucho steak sandwich, lebron 8,” Ms. Maduri says.

And she has offered jobs to former employees.

Her Wild Wing location, she says, has been a success, having benefited from the recent EuroCup and the Olympics. Ms. Maduri’s edge this time is differentiation giving sports fans a pub that offers televised sports with sound, and a wide-ranging menu.

Closing down a business might be tough, but it doesn’t have to mean the end.

Ten ways for women to raise their professional profiles - Th

</aside>

Drawing on lessons learned and observed, I have pieced together top ten ways for women in business to raise their professional profile.

1. Be memorable. Standing out from the crowd and gaining recognition for your accomplishments requires that the people remember you. The people who are most memorable are those who take time to remember small details about others. Pay close attention to the people you meet and their interests. Make a point of using their name. Remember things they have shared with you; projects they are working on,chanel sunglasses, people they are working with, challenges they are facing, or some other detail they have revealed. When you recall something about them the next time you meet, you will make a lasting impression.

2. Network beyond borders. First impressions count, while familiarity can breed contempt. These are not tired clichés but valuable principles to consider in your networking. The best opportunities to raise your profile may come from beyond your usual circles, nike lebron 10, when you meet and collaborate with people you wouldn’t normally work with. New connections can cast your potential in a new light, cheap louboutin shoes, and help you see untapped possibilities. Explaining what you do and how you do it to people who are unfamiliar with your work helps to hone your elevator pitch and maintain relevance in an ever-widening circle of influence.

3,Car freshener makes scents - The Globe and Mail. “Ask not what your country can do for you…” John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural speech urged Americans to focus on acts that would light the country and all who serve it, and in turn light the world. While building your business network is a far less lofty goal than the U.S. presidency, michael kors outlet store, your network is a community that deserves to be well served by you. We all know people who collect contacts like trophies and milk their network outrageously for support; never asking how they might serve the needs of others. If you keep former president Kennedy’s notable words in mind,Car heater leaves her cold - The Globe and Mail, you will remember to feed your community and create opportunities to light the world around you together.

4. Act courageously. Much of the current rhetoric about women in business and especially the paucity of women in senior executive roles suggest we don’t act courageously enough to achieve our full potential. Whereas men might consider a workplace promotion an opportunity to develop new capabilities, women will discount their experience and accomplishments as insufficient to apply. But as the saying goes, you can be sure to miss 100 per cent of the shots you never take! Some of the best opportunities for recognition come from applying for something you consider beyond your comfort zone, which could be a major accelerator to your career. You may miss out on that role but find a new opportunity opens up exclusively for you as a talented candidate with potential for growth.

5. “In a choice between nice and competent, choose competent…” (Sheryl Sandberg, christian louboutin sale, Lean In). One of the hardest skills for a leader to develop is the ability to make decisions that may be unpopular. Tough choices, while right for the business, may generate conflict. While leaders can be likeable and build consensus, they must also recognize when the time for negotiation is over and a final decision is required. Some things need a ‘decide and go’ approach, while others require a ‘discuss and conclude’ approach. Effective leaders are willing to choose competence over popularity and receive recognition from their colleagues as fair and principled rather than wishy-washy.

6. Do something you believe in, and let others be part of your journey. The most notable and recognizable leaders are infectious with their passion for their work. They communicate their vision, cheap michael kors, share their goals and engage with people over how what they are doing is relevant for the world. Whether they are entrepreneurs or corporate executives, cheap christian louboutin, they create opportunities for others to become believers in their story. Once someone believes in you and what you are trying to accomplish, chanel shoes, they are more likely to advocate for you and recommend you to others.

7,Fiji's unassuming side - The Globe and Mail. Ask for what you want. Pam Jeffery, president and CEO of The Jeffery Group and founder of the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) Top 100 Most Powerful Women awards believes there is nothing wrong in nominating yourself for a business award or asking a trusted contact to consider submitting a nomination on your behalf. A successful nomination requires a comprehensive profile to be put together in support of a candidate’s accomplishments and it is difficult to do this without the nominee’s input. For believers in your community, it may be just one more concrete way they can aid you in your mission, and you may be surprised at how happy they are to help.

8 Pay it forward, cheap lebron shoes. As women we need to do more to help each other and to recognise the strengths in those around us without prejudice. We need to act as mentors and sponsors to the younger generation. We need to recognize and understand the bias that exists when women are seen as successful and ‘difficult’ or ‘self-serving’. Recognising there is an inner tension in our community, women need to hold each other up and applaud successes rather than being negative and critical. Just as you should ask for a nomination if you believe your accomplishments are worthy, so you should offer to nominate another if they are deserving of recognition.

9. Develop 360 degree awareness. An effective leader recognizes that they can learn fresh insights from people up and down the career pipeline. Extend your awareness of the skills and capabilities of people all around you. The more you know about the strengths of others, the more you can work with them to address the most complex issues that your company or business faces today. If you network exclusively with influential powerhouses, a) you will be seen as a self-serving brown-noser and b) you will miss opportunities to be outstanding in your own right by leveraging the power of collaboration.

10. Keep your eyes on the prize. Award programs come and go but your professional integrity lasts a lifetime. Make sure that your projects are not over-engineered to match the selection criteria of an award and the accomplishments you claim are of your own making. Any metrics provided for adjudication committees must be backed up with real results. There are many ‘award winning’ advertisements and creative teams which have failed to deliver any kind of revenue growth for their clients. Ask yourself: beyond the public profile and recognition, how is what you are doing useful for the organisation, the people around you, lebron 9 shoes, and the community you are serving? Recognition comes in many forms, including personal satisfaction that you are doing the right things well.

Calgary apps maker scores No. 1 sales slot - The Globe and M

</aside>

“The first time I played with it, I was mesmerized. I knew I wanted to make apps. I’ve spent my whole life building software, and I had never seen anything quite like it, especially on something that fit in my pocket,”Mr. Sikorsky recalls.

That led the serial entrepreneur and his wife, Camille, to create Calgary-based ., in 2008,Premier Redford strikes tentative deal with Alberta doctors, as an apps developer for Apple’s mobile platform (iOS).

The company began by making games for the iPhone. Then, in the spring of 2010,michael kors handbags, Apple launched the iPad.

“Now,michael kors outlet store, enterprises had a mobile business tool that could be used by employees, customers and partners to deliver immediate and measureable results to a business’s bottom line,” Mr. Sikorsky says.

”It became immediately obvious to me that companies could use iPad applications to better engage employees, customers and business partners, and now was the perfect time to reach out and help enterprises [companies with 100-plus employees] leverage the power of iPads.”

Robots and Pencils faced two significant problems, however: How to attract big national and international customers, without having a strong brand or incurring the expense of building a large and expensive sales team; and how to differentiate itself from the thousands of other iOS developers getting into the game.

THE BACKGROUND

Mr,michael kors outlet store. Sikorsky is a serial software entrepreneur who started companies such as Servidium Inc. (acquired by Inc.) and Cambrian House (now called ).

His wife, Camille, is an award-winning graphic designer who had worked as a senior designer for and an instructor at .

The husband-and-wife team decided to put their talents together in creating Robots and Pencils. The company began building iPhone apps in Mr. Sikorsky’s basement by combining dedicated programmers (the robots) with award-winning designers (the pencils),The NHL knocks stereotype and prejudice out of the rink - Th.

The company scored success with its origins as an iPhone game maker, with hits such as Catch the Princess.

When the iPad came out, Mr. Sikorsky decided it was time to move into the enterprise market,Lakshmi Raj - The Globe and Mail, christian louboutin outlet, aiming to sell iPad applications development to companies seeking to leverage mobile computing for field workers and employees working directly with customers, including sales, support and service.

The challenge quickly became how an early-stage company in a relatively new market – iOS development – could attract big companies as customers when it did not have a recognized brand or, at the time, the funds needed to hire an experienced sales team.

THE SOLUTION

The solution came in two parts. First, Robots and Pencils had to find a national partner that already had the customers Mr. Sikorsky coveted. Second, christian louboutin sale, the firm had to find a way to differentiate itself from the numerous other software development companies that were jumping on the iOS bandwagon.

Part one was accomplished when the company was able to sign a strategic partnership with . That partnership came about after Mr. Sikorsky gave a presentation at a mobile event held by Rogers and Telus Corp., at which he laid out his vision for how enterprises could adopt the iPad; it matched with Rogers’ own vision. After several meetings, a partnership was formed to build applications for Rogers customers.

The second part was developed by applying game dynamics to enterprise applications.

Since Robots and Pencils had expertise and a reputation for iPhone game development, michael kors bags, Mr. Sikorsky decided this uniquely positioned the company to integrate game dynamics into enterprise applications.

“By injecting game-based mechanisms, such as simulations, lebron james shoes, micro-missions, achievements, and reward systems, into iOS applications, we are able to turn ordinary tasks into transformative opportunities, and we show our customers how they can capitalize on that,” says Mr. Sikorsky.

THE RESULT

The Rogers partnership was a win not only in itself but also in in bringing on other significant customers, such as? . and Ltd..

Robots and Pencils teamed up with . to develop the iconic comic strip Spy vs Spy into a game for Apple’s iPhone, chanel sunglasses, iPod Touch and iPad.

The game debuted this past August. The weekend it launched, it became the No. 1 paid app globally, stayed there for nearly three weeks. and has continued to be a large revenue generator.

From a team of two spouses operating out of the basement, Robots and Pencils has quickly grown into a 70-employee company, without any outside funding.

Its customers, in a range of industries from oil and gas to health care, television, film and airlines, include more than 10 Fortune 500 companies, coach outlet store online, and its apps have been used by nearly five million people.

“We believe we got here by being a Goldilocks’ company – big enough to handle multimillion-dollar projects and small enough to care about customers and deliver on the promises we make.” Mr. Sikorsky says.

Ontario teachers, government head back to the table - The Gl

</aside>

“Some people are just so upset about how this whole process started and played out that they may just never come back [to leading extracurriculars],lebron 10 shoes,” he said.

Mr. Coran expects that the “silent majority, lebron 8,” or about 80 per cent of his members, will resume voluntary activities such as leading debate teams, lebron james shoes, coaching track or chaperoning proms.

The negotiations will focus on existing contract terms (which were imposed through Bill 115) and for new contracts set to take effect in the fall of 2014. Ontario’s new premier,Did your dreams of a lush garden wither by August How to tur, Kathleen Wynne, cheap louboutin shoes, has refused to re-open existing contracts, but Mr. Coran said that some cost-neutral changes could still be made.

An internal memo to OSSTF members obtained by the Globe and Mail shows that three unpaid professional development days – which amount to a 1.5 per cent pay cut – are a “priority issue” for the union. One possibility would be for teachers to trade three mandatory unpaid days for an optional window of between one and six unpaid days, michael kors outlet, a cost-neutral trade that was negotiated in local bargaining sessions in November.

The confidential document also identifies, as a long-term goal, protecting the pay grid that enables teacher salaries to climb from about $40,coach outlet store online,000 to $90,000 over ten years based on education and experience. (Legislation introduced in September sought a revision to that grid, with a view toward savings.)

Mr. Coran said negotiations between high school teachers and the province would begin this week, and that local discussions would resume as early as next week. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is meeting in the coming days with the province, and its leadership is expected to consider resuming extracurriculars later in the week.

Pressure has been mounting in recent weeks for teachers to stop their political protest,Bombardier Giving women wings - The Globe and Mail, as fears grew that the loss of extracurriculars could drive students away from the public system into Catholic or private schools.

“The concern is that Grade 8s are making their choice right now whether to go Catholic or public schools,” said one Windsor, Ont.,chanel handbags, high-school teacher with close to five years’ experience. “If we lose a lot of student enrolment, younger teachers could lose positions.”

The rise in these concerns coincided with a leadership change for the Ontario government, which has resurrected talks between union leaders and the province under new premier Kathleen Wynne.

Sources said local OSSTF leaders learned of the motion being brought forward the night before Friday’s vote. There was a passionate debate in the room Friday, cheap christian louboutin, but in the end, local presidents were asked to trust their leadership, chanel outlet, sources said. Many – not all – agreed to the request that teachers reinstate extracurriculars.

There was fear that an Ontario Labour Relations Board decision could affect high-school teachers. (Two small school boards,RIM earnings to give first look at BlackBerry 10 sales figur, michael kors outlet store, Upper Canada District School Board and Trillium Lakelands District School Board, are arguing that the elementary teachers union has mandated teachers to stop voluntary activities, which they say constitutes an illegal strike. A decision is expected shortly.) There was also concern among OSSTF leaders that public opinion was no longer in their favour, sources said. Multiple meetings between OSSTF and the government Thursday led to an agreement to formalize the bargaining process, a government source said.

The union’s executive voted unanimously to restore extracurriculars based on progress made in those talks, but some local-level leaders opposed the idea.

Saving for retirement the last financial priority for many e

Brendan Charters admits that, when he and business partner Jim Cunningham started their renovation and home building company, Eurodale Developments, thinking about retirement wasn’t foremost on their minds.

“We started Eurodale in 2003 and we didn’t have a formalized plan,” says Mr. Charters, 34. “We were more concerned about getting our first projects and making the business viable and putting our energy into that.”

That’s the case for many small business owners, says Lee Helkie of Helkie Financial & Insurance Services Inc., a Toronto financial adviser and member of Advocis (the Financial Advisors Association of Canada).

Typically, chanel handbags, she says, the first 10 years of a small business’ life is all about building the business and “it’s very difficult to get someone to even consider another asset class. They are borrowing and it’s hard for them to take money away they could be putting into the business.”

But it’s vital that entrepreneurs,Loonie ends higher on solid factory data - The Globe and Mai, like an increasing number of Canadians who are without defined pension plans, save for their retirement, she says.

Before he started Eurodale, Mr. Charters had worked as an account representative with a major insurance and benefits provider, so he knew that it was important to plan for the future. As his business became established, he contacted Ms. Helkie for advice. “In my previous job, I got a great education on pensions and insurance, and saw very clearly what happens when you have them and when you don’t,” Mr. Charters says.

He started investing in RRSPs, life insurance, land and corporate class investments (a group of mutual funds structured as a corporation).

“One of the best things small-business owners can do is to diversify and hold assets outside of the business,Meet Regent Park’s cultural revitalizer - The Globe and Mai,tory burch boots,” says Ms. Helkie. “That can mean any number of things, such as RRSPs and TFSAs (tax free savings accounts), but it’s not always easy for them to do. As we’ve seen in the last five to 10 years, it’s not good to put all of your eggs in one basket.”

When a company is in growth mode it’s a good time to consult a financial adviser and map out a plan, she suggests. “It helps you step back and see the broader picture, especially if you still have a tendency to put everything into the business.”

Another entrepreneur, Patrick Lyver, tory burch flats, 33, invested everything he had into his company but always made sure to add to his RRSPs.

“I had a goal," says Mr. Lyver, who is CEO of Kleurvision Inc., a graphic design, marketing and communications company he founded in 2004 in Port Perry, Ont. “I knew that I was going to borrow against it for the Home Buyers’ Plan [a federal government program that allows home buyers to borrow from their RRSP to buy a home], so I wanted to make sure that I was able to maximize that.”

RRSPs are the “gold standard” for saving for retirement, Ms. Helkie says, lebron 10 shoes, but the TFSA is also a great place to build assets. “You don’t get the same tax break going in, and small business owners are very tax-conscious. But you’ll solve the tax issues in retirement by having a pot of money that is tax-free.”

“One thing foolishly we haven’t jumped on yet is the TFSA,” says Mr. Charters. “It’s a great way to income-split, and it has tax-free yields, but old habits die hard.”

Canadians can contribute up to a maximum of $5,500 to a TFSA annually and the cash can be withdrawn any time without penalty. One drawback is that entrepreneurs could be tempted to take money out and use it for their business instead of letting it grow for retirement, Mrs. Helkie says.

She says it’s not always easy for entrepreneurs to see the value in starting to save for retirement. “Entrepreneurs are very optimistic people and it’s difficult to say to them, ‘Ten years from now, it may not look the way you think it will.’”

Mr. Lyver, of Kleurvision, says he listened to his parents, who are also entrepreneurs, and started saving before he began university. He started buying RRSPs when he was 20. “With my parents, it wasn’t a discussion so much about retirement, but more about building personal wealth,” Mr. Lyver recalls. “They told me, ‘If you put $100 a month away, you won’t realize you are missing it, then look at it 10 years later and you’ll be surprised.’ They said, michael kors bags, ‘You’re only able to work so much and you’ll want to have wealth in the future.’”

Mr. Lyver is balancing his investment in his firm with monthly contributions to RRSPs, a TFSA and to his son’s registered education savings plan. His financial adviser helped him and his wife develop a strategic budget, allocating where their money goes each month.

“It solidified what we wanted to do,michael kors outlet, got us looking at where we want to be in five years and how we can do that. We couldn’t do that without help, tory burch outlet,” he says. “It’s important to look at a plan, not just do what I think feels right. You need strategy and knowledge.”

Entrepreneurs often hope they’ll be able to sell their business and use the proceeds to help fund their retirement, chanel outlet, Ms. Helkie says, coach factory outlet, but that is risky. “The case may be that it’s not worth as much as you think at retirement, so having something else is a good idea.”

Mr. Charters says that, as the renovating and building industry is “feast or famine,” his investments outside his business provide a contingency fund if the building industry hits a slump. They also provide peace of mind about his exit strategy.

Mr. Lyver also hopes that he’ll be able to sell his firm or that perhaps his son will take over the business, but he isn’t banking on that. “For the longest time,Phone bill shock New app reduces data use - The Globe and Ma, my name was so tied to Kleurvision, but what I’ve been working on in the last two years is to remove Kleurvision’s attachment to Patrick Lyver, with the goal to eventually have a sellable business,” he says. “But I’m not going to rely on that for my retirement.”

“We see a lot of business owners hanging on to their business because it isn’t worth what they thought it would be,” notes Ms. Helkie. “If you’ve diversified, it gives you the freedom to walk away if the business is not going in the right direction or if you can’t find suitable buyers.”

“You need to have a rainy-day fund and, if you are self-employed, it has to be higher than for other people.”

Sandberg, michael kors outlet store, the current chief operating officer of Facebook got lucky (i.e. rich) and now she wants to rub our faces in it.

    Her advice sucks.

    She’s a self-promoter.

She so brazenly thinks her experiences might help other women, michael kors bags, she’s even set up an organization to create mentors. As if anyone has time for that! The nerve.

Having read the book – which is now roaring up the the bestseller lists – none of the snipes are fair. In fact,? I wonder how many of Sandberg’s harshest critics actually read the book themselves. Despite what , she does not spend a lot of space proposing women practise “one-hour forced smile sessions.” She does recommend smiling, in general – a bold move – but she makes that passing reference while sharing how she used to be an aerobics teacher. If that’s your big take-away from the book, then you should probably save your $30.

Is her advice perfect, tory burch flats? No. And she says so herself, tory burch outlet.

The book distills down to a pre-emptive warning to women moving up the corporate ladder (or the jungle gym, as she calls it): Here are the stereotypes you’ll likely face, and the ones you may have unconsciously perpetuated yourself, and here are some tips to handle it.

Some of her advice applies to everyone: Confidently take your seat at the table, but don’t dominate the conversation. Be ready to “’lean in” during the early years. Ask for the raise, she says, but share credit with your team. Choose your life partner carefully. If women have to be particularly mindful of this tricky balance, chanel handbags, she concedes, well, coach factory outlet, that’s the game we play to get the top. And she wants the company. For one thing, it’s harder to focus attacks when your critics have many targets.

For the record, I liked the Sheryl Sandberg I met in the book. Even if a good ghost writer did the heavy lifting,RBC cuts outlook on gold price, producers - The Globe and Ma, Lean In cites interesting research, chanel outlet, quotes other female executives, and shares some funny anecdotes – like discovering lice on her daughter while flying with colleagues on a corporate jet.

But that’s also my problem with the book: Sandberg tries too hard to be likable. She does the work for her inevitable critics in the introduction and then continues to apologize every so often. She knows she can’t speak for all women; she knows people will huff that she has the benefit of being rich and she keeps reminding us that she supports the right of women to choose their career or family priorities. She clarifies that she’s not a “scholar, a journalist, or a sociologist,” and that her book is a “sort of” feminist manifesto. (It should be noted, that at least, unlike many prominent women, she proudly declares herself a feminist.)

Why does she do this? She falls into the very trap she cautions her readers to watch out for: worrying too much about being popular, to the detriment of their ambitions. I don’t care if I like Sandberg, I want to read what she has to say. I don’t want her to waste words feeling awkward for being talented and lucky. Why do we expect successful women to speak for every woman? That’s impossible. Lean In does focus more on individual action than wider systemic change. (Maybe that will be in her next book). But why would we assume she has all the answers, anyway? Are readers not discriminating enough to take the nuggets that make sense to them and leave the rest?

The reaction to her book proves her thesis – women are stuck either way. If Steve Jobs (the last guy to have worried about his likeability factor) had offered to guide a mentorship program, the crowds would have lined up – and I bet, tory burch sale, despite what critics snipe, a lot of young women will do the same for Sandberg. The truth is,Submit a Facts and Arguments Essay - The Globe and Mail, tory burch outlet online, books on work-life balance line the shelves at Chapters. However, there aren’t enough like Lean In .

“In the future,” Sandberg writes hopefully, “there will be no female leaders. Just leaders.”

And maybe, in that same future, chanel outlet, a smart, successful female business leader can write a book,The limits of freedom for educated girls in Malala's Pa, and it will just be a book by a smart, successful business leader. Fingers crossed.

Momentum in the biotechnology space is attracting growth-focused investors to an asset class that was once sought mainly for its dividends and protection from volatile markets, chanel handbags.

That’s certainly the case for CI Global Health Sciences Corporate Class, which claimed the top spot in the screen with a return of nearly 44 per cent for the year ended March 31. The fund has a broad mandate to invest in global companies that specialize in the health care or medical industries, michael kors outlet, but it is weighted heavily toward the United States.

A vibrant, eye-catching cheese with big flavour to match - T

Named after the English city of Leicester, this firm, cheap michael kors, vibrant cow’s milk cheese is undeniably an eye-catcher. But it’s not all show: Red Leicester is a cheese you’ll crave even as the last crumb disappears. Its bright-orange colour, tory burch outlet, originally added to distinguish it at the market, comes from the addition of annatto, lebron 10 shoes, a natural dye that is also used for cheddar. Though cheddar-like in quality with full, milky notes on the palate, it surprises with savoury-sweet flavours that hint of earth, caramel, nike lebron, toffee and nuts. Dense but moist, Red Leicester is slightly flaky when sliced. I love to shave thin slices onto salads or sandwiches. It packs so much flavour that a little goes a long way.

Bloodless Not very bloody, but kind of muddy - The Globe and

Toronto theatre celebrated a birth this week – with a musical overflowing with death.

Bloodless is the much-anticipated first full production by Theatre 20, a new ensemble that aims to become a kind of musical-theatre equivalent of Toronto’s classical Soulpepper Theatre Company. Many of Canada’s top triple threats – whose resumés are filled with Stratford, chanel sunglasses, Shaw, Broadway and Mirvish – have banded together to reinvent classic musicals and create new Canadian ones.

    </p></li></ul></aside>

Bloodless, written by Winnipeg-based composer/lyricist Joseph Aragon, is their first stab at the latter, more difficult task.

The story is based on an actual case of a string of anatomy murders in Edinburgh during the early 19th century; Irish immigrants William Burke (Evan Buliung) and William Hare (Eddie Glen) plied over a dozen men and women with alcohol, smothered them and then sold their bodies to Dr. Robert Knox (David Keeley) for dissection in his medical classroom The two were aided and abetted in this by their romantic partners, michael kors bags, Margaret Hare (Jan Alexandra Smith), who ran the rundown boarding house to which they would lure their victims, and Helen McDougal (Trish Lindstrom).

For most of his telling of the tale, Aragon hews closely to the facts of the case. When we first encounter Burke and Hare, they are simply selling the body of a lodger who died of natural causes before paying his rent.

The pounds they receive from Dr. Knox for this is a far cry from the mere shillings a day they get working as labourers in the canal. Before you know it, the two are sizing up a lodger who is near death and singing a dark and wittily written plea for euthanasia, The Bugger Is Better Off Dead. With Margaret, reluctantly,Trudeau’s rise brings broken Liberal Party back t,lebron 9 shoes, and Helen, tory burch shoes, enthusiastically, onside, Burke and Hare’s definition of “better off dead” expands quickly – too quickly, in fact, to fully involve the audience in their actions.

Bloodless has a tone problem, lebron 9, though perhaps it’s more the problem of how director Adam Brazier, who is also Theatre 20’s artistic director, presents the material. Early on, the production wants us to treat these serial killings as light-hearted entertainment – Dr. Knox enters with a song that riffs on Gilbert and Sullivan’s Modern Major General, for example. But soon enough, it wishes to pull our heartstrings over the plight of those who disappear without a trace.

After her friend Mary disappears, Janet Brown (Carly Street) sets out on a search for her to find only to encounter indifference from the police and the upstanding citizens of Edinburgh. Janet and Mary, you see, work as prostitutes – and the parallels between 19th-century society’s willingness to turn a blind eye to “undesirables” and what happened in the case of Robert Pickton in our own time is underlined.

Bloodless has trouble transitioning from lark to this stark reality, in part because this portion of the show hits way too close to home. Thematically, the show stumbles. Is it a moral parable about a slippery slope when we treat life as anything less than sacred? Or is it more satirical,High blood pressure in pregnancy boosts diabetes r, showing about how capitalism commodifies us all? (It does, after all, coach outlet store online, take place in the city and not so long after the time of Adam Smith.)

The first half of the play lives up to its title as we try to figure out how to watch the show and how seriously to engage with it. In the second act, the action does pick up a bit – as the relationships between Hare and Burke and their respective romantic partners become better defined.

While Aragon’s lyrics are often witty,Lakshmi Raj - The Globe and Mail, his score is difficult to judge on this initial listen due to technical difficulties that either overamplified or underamplified the leads on opening night. Still, it’s hard to resist comparisons with two superior musicals set in the 19th century – Stephen Sondheim’s morally complex masterpiece Sweeney Todd and the more melodramatic and popular Les Misérables, chanel outlet.

Perhaps the material is less clichéd than the presentation, lebron james shoes, however. Brazier recently distinguished himself with a small-scale, actor-musician production of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, coach factory outlet, but the creativity he showed there is rarely evident here in a rather dreary production that takes place on and in front of a single-level catwalk, tory burch boots, lit like a sewer except for overused flashes of red. (To be fair, it seems the director’s baton was passed twice in the show’s development; Colm Wilkinson remains credited as “creative consultant.”)

Naturally, the strongest elements are the performances. Both Buliung and Glen are excellent in the second half, when they’re given more to chew on than a kind of nonchalant greed. Lindstrom, meanwhile, is one of the few who really delivers on the humour promised in the script, her flighty and materialistic Helen sparkling in an otherwise dour show.

I only wish Theatre 20 well; Bloodless shows a company with huge ambitions. If it’s to achieve them, though, it may have to sign up a stable of directors with experience to match that of its performers.
