Unfortunately there's no survey tool for it. You just have to harvest a resource to get a general idea. To get the exact position within the skinny, normal and fat ranges, you have to calculate the percentage yourself.

The game uses (Skill+100)/100 as a factor for a lot of other formulas as well. That was the easy part. Testing various levels of Hunting and with Veghash for the same type of creature at the same spot matched that formula.

Testing the same kind of resource at the same spot I saw the number of units were related to the creature level, but I didn't find the actual factor until I noticed the scouting exp for harvesting. The scouting exp received seems independent of your harvesting skills. I've tested it with various levels of hunting and get the same exp each time. Here are the levels and creature factors I know of:

4:27, 5:34, 6:42, 7:50, 8:59, 9:69, 10:79, 14:125, 15:137, 17:164, 18:178, 20:206, 25:285, 30:371, 32:408, 36:485, 44:652, 53:858, 57:956

To find more levels, just ensure your scouting exp isn't maxed and harvest creatures of those levels.

I always suspected that creature resources had concentrations after one of the bugs in the early months. A new resource could then not be sampled until next reboot because the concentration wasn't registered properly. And newly spawned creature resources only returned 1 unit as well. And recently I was attacked inside the ticket booth on Lok and tried to harvest the corpse. It returned 1 unit since there are no concentrations inside. The breakpoints for the resources were found by doing tons of Piket missions when Dantooine had a good herbivore. I marked lots of waypoints with the units and harvest messages. Once I found a normal and fat close together, I dragged Pikets to various places between the two points. That way I found the number of units for the breakpoints. And the breakpoints matched exactly 9% and 13.5% for all types of Pikets.
