Herald npcs are npcs that are used to inform players of particular spots on a planet through dialogue and by issuing waypoints. They are essentially "waypoint quest" givers and use the same system that waypoint oriented quests use. A player may only undertake one quest at a time, and therefore a player may not interact with one of these npcs if they already have a waypoint quest in progress; and vice versa.

When a player interacts with a herald npc, the npc will usually engage in a dialogue requesting the player to go visit a location. If the player accepts the request, they are given a waypoint to visit. When the player gets within 80 meters of the waypoint, the "quest" is completed and the waypoint removed from the player's datapad.
